Impressive Lineup Of Guests, Concerts And Exclusive Engagements At TIFF Bell Lightbox This Fall
TORONTO – Noah Cowan, Artistic Director, announced highlights for the inaugural programme this fall at TIFF Bell Lightbox. Covering events taking place from September 23 to November 24, today’s announcements include the lineup of contemporary and classic exclusive engagements and an exciting array of Essential Cinema special events and guests that will engage audiences of all ages through concerts, in-person appearances and family activities. “With the launch of our inaugural season of programming in our new home, we are offering audiences a rich and dynamic experience at TIFF Bell Lightbox,” said Piers Handling, Director and CEO of TIFF. “Our curatorial team has been working tirelessly over the past two years to bring to TIFF Bell Lightbox many of the world’s most interesting filmmakers, critics, musicians and personalities to celebrate cinema’s power and magic and today’s announcement proves that they have achieved this ambitious goal.”

Special Guests and Concerts
Internationally renowned filmmakers, critics and scholars will introduce and talk about the films on TIFF’s Essential 100 list. Confirmed guests to date include Canadian masters David Cronenberg and Michael Snow; actor, director and icon Isabella Rossellini; award-winning author and creator of Dexter, Jeff Lindsay; cult director John Waters; noted writer, scholar and film critic Molly Haskell; Academy Award®-winning film editor and sound designer Walter Murch; and acclaimed director, author and raconteur Peter Bogdanovich. Also as part of Essential Cinema, some of the most intriguing and accomplished musicians from the classical and popular music worlds will create live accompaniment for silent films on the list. Some highlights include award-winning composer Michael Nyman’s score for Man with a Movie Camera, Toronto instrumental post-rock outfit Do Make Say Think’s take on Greed, and multimedia artist and writer DJ Spooky’s Rebirth of a Nation.
Special Weekend Events
TIFF will offer a diverse range of special programming for individuals and families alike over four weekends throughout the fall. Essential Restorations: Four Films from the Academy Film Archive is a special weekend devoted to the Academy’s invaluable restorations of four cinematic masterpieces, three of which are on the Essential 100 list. It will include an in-depth discussion with Academy Film Archive Director Michael Pogorzelski. Halloween at TIFF Bell Lightbox will offer family-friendly daytime screenings, activities and workshops. Audiences will celebrate the City of Toronto’s 5th annual Scotiabank Nuit Blanche with an eclectic range of programmes such as Singin’ in the Dark, a riotous sing-along with stand-up and cabaret artist Shawn Hitchins, featuring hit tunes from the movies and Grindbox!, a cinematic celebration of the weird, the wild and the wonderful. During Culture Days, TIFF will present a wealth of free screenings, installations and family activities.
Exclusive Engagements
Running for at least one week, exclusive engagements of contemporary and classic films will start on September 23 at TIFF Bell Lightbox. The fall calendar lineup starts with a triple threat: Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Palme d’Or winner, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010); Xavier Dolan’s Canadian Cannes sensation, Les Amours imaginaires (2010); and Yael Hersonski’s Hot Docs winner, A Film Unfinished (2010). Major titles coming later include Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s Howl (2010); Bruce McDonald’s latest rock n’ roll romp, Trigger (2010); and Olivier Assayas’s breathtakingly expansive historical epic, Carlos (2010). Restored and archival prints of ten Essential Cinema classics will also play as exclusive engagements, including Jean-Luc Godard’s iconic Breathless (1960), presented in a newly restored print (made to celebrate its 50th anniversary) is into its tenth week of screenings at New York’s Film Forum; Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather (1972); a new print of Wong Kar-wai’s Chungking Express (1994); and Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927), presented in its newly restored, most complete version, which includes 25 minutes of lost footage.
