Film And Music Together At TIFF Bell Lightbox This Fall
TORONTO – Beginning on September 28 and continuing until November 17, TIFF Bell Lightbox will host a series of live concerts by some of the most intriguing and accomplished musicians from the classical and popular music worlds. These artists will create live accompaniment for silent films on the Essential 100 list, with highlights including Do Make Say Think’s adapted score for Erich von Stroheim’s Greed; DJ Spooky’s Rebirth of a Nation; and Michael Nyman’s composition for Man With a Movie Camera. Each concert will showcase music composed for or inspired by each featured film. Tickets are on sale now. ESSENTIAL CINEMA CONCERTS
The Passion of Joan of Arc and Richard Einhorn’s Voices of Light, Performed by the Toronto Consort and Choir 21 in association with Soundstreams, Conducted by David Fallis
Performed around the world to tremendous acclaim, from the Lincoln Center in New York to the Sydney Opera House, Richard Einhorn’s opera/oratorio Voices of Light draws direct inspiration from Carl Theodor Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928), film # 1 on the Essential 100 list. For two nights in September, the Toronto Consort, Canada’s leading chamber ensemble specializing in the music of the Middle Ages, Renaissance and early Baroque periods, will accompany this silent masterpiece with a special version of Einhorn’s haunting score, adapted by the composer himself.

Greed with Do Make Say Think
World Premiere
Toronto instrumental post-rock outfit Do Make Say Think bring their hybrid of psych, jazz, punk and electronica to Greed (1925), Erich von Stroheim’s tale of obsession and murder, and film # 77 on the list. They will construct a live score from their trademark blend of noise, narrative and melody. Surprise guests from among Do Make Say Think’s close friends and collaborators in Toronto’s indie rock scene will join them onstage to create two engaging nights of film music.

Michael Nyman with Man with a Movie Camera / NYman with a Movie Camera
Toronto Premiere
Michael Nyman, composer of the award-winning soundtrack to Jane Campion’s The Piano, visits TIFF Bell Lightbox for one weekend in October featuring two special musical presentations. On Saturday, October 23, the Michael Nyman Band performs the composer’s original score for Dziga Vertov’s masterpiece of montage, Man with a Movie Camera (1929), film # 9 on the list. For the Sunday matinee on October 24, the band will play alongside Nyman’s painstaking shot-for-shot reconstruction of Vertov’s film, NYman with a Movie Camera, which uses footage from the composer’s personal film archive shot over the past two decades to create a modern-day take on experimental documentary filmmaking. Both shows will include performances of additional works selected from Michael Nyman’s music and film repertoire.

Metropolis with Gabriel Thibaudeau
Toronto Premiere
To mark the premiere of the new restoration of Metropolis (1927), film # 50 on the list, and its 25 minutes of previously lost material, Gabriel Thibaudeau, celebrated pianist and composer for the Cinémathèque québécoise—who premiered his original score for Robert Flaherty’s Nanook of the North at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2005—was commissioned to create a new score for Fritz Lang’s science fiction masterpiece. Debuted this past summer at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, this new score brings two chamber orchestras to the stage to express the class struggle at the heart of the film: a soaring string quintet and keyboard represent the elitist spirit of the city, a booming brass quintet with organ embodies the surging power of the subterranean workers, with the two worlds linked through percussion. Metropolis with Gabriel Thibaudeau is presented by TIFF in association with the Goethe-Institut Toronto.

DJ Spooky’s Rebirth of a Nation
DJ Spooky’s Rebirth of a Nation is a film project derived from D.W. Griffith’s infamous Birth of a Nation (1915), film # 81 on the list. The original film was based on a novel and play by Thomas Dixon entitled The Clansman; multimedia artist and writer DJ Spooky remixes the film providing a new soundtrack and voiceover. DJ Spooky’s Rebirth of a Nation has toured internationally and has received acclaim as an encounter between film, music, and contemporary art. Toronto’s hottest Baroque ensemble, I Furiosi, will join DJ Spooky to perform the live score.

En septembre, pour deux soirées, le Toronto Consort, l’orchestre de chambre en tête au Canada spécialisant dans la musique du Moyen-âge, de la renaissance et des anciennes périodes baroques, accompagnera ce chef-d’œuvre silencieux avec une version spéciale de la trame sonore obsédante d’Einhorn, adaptée par le compositeur lui-même.

Le groupe instrumental post-rock de Toronto, Do Make Say Think, apporte leur propre hybride de psych, jazz, punk et électronique à Greed (1925), une histoire d’obsession et de meurtre par Erich von Stroheim et le film #77 sur la liste. Ils produiront une trame sonore à partir de leur mélange unique de bruit, narration et mélodie. Des invités surprises parmi les amis proches de Do Make Say Think et les collaborateurs de la scène rock de Toronto se joindront à eux sur l’estrade pour créer deux soirées engageantes de film et musique.

Michael Nyman avec Man With a Movie Camera / NYman With a Movie Camera
Première présentation à Toronto
Michael Nyman, compositeur primé pour la piste sonore, The Piano, de Jane Campion, visitera TIFF Bell Lightbox lors d’une fin de semaine en octobre mettant en vedette deux représentations musicales très spéciales. Le samedi 23 octobre, la troupe de Michael Nyman présentera la trame sonore originale du compositeur pour le chef-d’œuvre en montage de Dziga Vertov; Man with a Movie Camera (1929), le film #9 sur la liste. Pour la matinée du dimanche 24 octobre, la troupe se produira couplée avec la reconstitution laborieuse, plan sur plan, du film NYman With a Movie Camera de Vertov. Ce film utilise les séquences d’archives personnelles du compositeur filmées au cours des deux dernières décennies dans le but de créer une approche modernisée sur la réalisation de film documentaire expérimental. Les deux présentations comprendront des représentations d’œuvres additionnelles choisies du répertoire de music et de films de Michael Nyman. Le samedi 23 octobre à 20 h et le dimanche 24 octobre à 12 h 30.
Metropolis avec Gabriel Thibaudeau
Première présentation à Toronto
Pour marquer la première présentation de la reconstitution de Metropolis (1927), film # 50 sur la liste, et son 25 minutes de matériel antérieurement perdu, Gabriel Thibaudeau, pianiste célébré et compositeur pour Cinémathèque québécoise – qui a présenté sa trame sonore originale pour Nanook of the North de Robert Flaherty au Festival international du film à Toronto en 2005 – a été nommé pour créer une nouvelle trame sonore pour le chef-d’œuvre en science-fiction de Fritz Lang. Ayant débuté l’été dernière au Festival international de films Fantasia à Montréal, cette nouvelle trame sonore rassemble deux orchestres de chambre sur l’estrade pour exprimer le combat de classe au cœur du film avec les deux mondes liés par la percussion: une quintette vibrante à cordes et clavier représente l’esprit élitiste de la ville et une quintette résonnante à cuivres avec orgue incorpore le pouvoir surgissant des travailleurs souterrains. Metropolis avec Gabriel Thibaudeau est présenté par TIFF en collaboration avec Goethe-Institut Toronto.
