As part of the 2013 Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival, we salute the legacy of the great French filmmaker with an exhibition of over a half-century of his photographs in the CIBC Canadian Film Gallery.
Curated by Bonnie Rubenstein.
Co-presented with the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival.
TIFF, in partnership with the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival, is proud to present this special exhibition of photographs by the legendary French filmmaker Chris Marker in the CIBC Canadian Film Gallery at TIFF Bell Lightbox. Over the course of his peripatetic, seven-decade career, Marker established himself as one of the most visionary and influential artists of the postwar era with his witty and eloquent ruminations on the mysteries of memory, the nature of time, and the language, meanings and power of both the still and the moving image — most famously in his masterpiece La Jetée, a film composed almost entirely of still images.
Comprised of photographs dating from the 1950s to 2010 — including everything from Marker's documentation of demonstrations on the streets of Paris in the late 1960s to photo-portraits of the many people, both famous and anonymous, whom he met during his frequent travels around the world — this exhibition is complemented by TIFF Cinematheque's mini-retrospective of some of Marker's key films, as well as a large-format mural depicting the first fourteen shots of La Jetée that will be displayed on the outside of TIFF Bell Lightbox.
