A hit at this year's SXSW Film Festival, the sophomore feature from writer-director Destin Daniel Cretton is set in a foster-care facility for at-risk youth, where the young staff try to help their troubled charges while dealing with their own life troubles. The film focuses on Grace (Brie Larson), a passionate and strong-willed supervisor who works at the home alongside her longtime boyfriend Mason (John Gallagher, Jr.). Though Grace is a formidable caretaker for the kids in her charge, her own difficult past — and a surprising future that suddenly presents itself — throws her life off-track. As Grace struggles to help two new arrivals at Short Term 12, she finds in them both a mirror of her own experiences and, perhaps, an unexpected source of redemption. "A small wonder[:] a film of exceptional naturalness and empathy that takes material [that] could have been generic and turns it into something moving and intimate" (Kenneth Turan, The Los Angeles Times).
