This intimate documentary portrait of the French nouvelle vague icon follows Rivette and the great film critic Serge Daney as they lounge in cafes and wander the streets of Paris, reflecting on Rivette's films, background and aesthetic philosophy.

Denis' intimate documentary portrait of nouvelle vague icon (and former Denis mentor) Jacques Rivette, commissioned as part of the French TV series Cinéma, de notre temps, follows the filmmaker as he and the great film critic Serge Daney (both of them former writers for Cahiers du Cinéma) lounge in cafés and wander the streets of Paris, reflecting on Rivette's films, background and aesthetic philosophy in between numerous other digressions. Featuring clips from many of Rivette's major films (including the legendary Out 1) and interviews with such key Rivette actors as Bulle Ogier and Jean-François Stévenin, Jacques Rivette—Le veilleur "beautifully captures Rivette the man, as both solitary cinephile and exploratory filmmaker" (Jonathan Rosenbaum).
