This up-close-and-personal documentary portrait follows Nicolas Winding Refn as he struggles to rebuild his critical reputation (and his personal finances) following the failure of Fear X by embarking on the back-to-back sequels to Pusher.
In 2000, the thirty-year-old Nicolas Winding Refn was on top of the world: his first two features, Pusher and Bleeder, had both been enormous critical and commercial successes, and his future looked brighter than bright. By 2003, it had all fallen apart: Winding Refn had put his own finances on the line to make his English-language debut Fear X, and the film's disastrous box-office performance left the young filmmaker (and new father) staring financial ruin in the face. Phie Ambo's documentary Gambler follows Winding Refn as he struggles to clear his debts and rebuild his reputation by directing the two back-to-back sequels to his first hit Pusher. "Both hilarious and harrowing" (Hot Docs), Gambler is an entertaining and insightful look at the space where art and commerce collide.
