Daredevil archaeologist-adventurer Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) races to keep the fabled Ark of the Covenant out of the hands of the Nazis, in Steven Spielberg's super-charged updating of the cliffhanging movie serials of the 1930s and 1940s.
In 1936, daredevil archaeologist-adventurer Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is recruited by the US government to retrieve the legendary Ark of the Covenant — the Biblical relic containing the broken tablets of the Ten Commandments — ahead of the Nazis. Hooking up with his ex-flame Marion (Karen Allen), Indy must race against time and face countless dangers as he struggles to keep the Ark out of the hands of the would-be master race. Both a nostalgic evocation and super-charged updating of the cliffhanging movie serials of the thirties and forties, Steven Spielberg's attempt to show that he could bring in a film on a relatively low budget (after the costly disaster of 1941) became the template for eighties big-budget entertainment and one of the director's most enduringly popular films. "Raiders of the Lost Ark is an out-of-body experience, a movie of glorious imagination and breakneck speed that grabs you in the first shot, hurtles you through a series of incredible adventures, and deposits you back in reality two hours later-breathless, dizzy, wrung-out, and with a silly grin on your face" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times).
