The first of MGM's lavish Dickens adaptations is brilliantly directed by the great George Cukor and features marvellous performances from Dame Edna May Oliver as Aunt Betsey, Roland Young as Uriah Heep, and the incomparable W.C. Fields as Mr. Micawber.

The first of MGM's lavish 1930s adaptations of Dickens, spearheaded by mercurial producer David O. Selznick and directed with great verve by George Cukor, who had already demonstrated his facility with adapting classic nineteenth-century novels with Little Women two years earlier. A joyous version of Dickens' most autobiographical novel, not least because of W.C. Fields' comic genius in brilliantly embodying Mr. Micawber.
