First popularized in a series of novels beginning in 1920, Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond was a British gentleman crime-fighter often considered to be one of the literary grandfathers of Fleming's James Bond. Though Drummond had been brought to the screen several times before (most notably in a late silent version starring Ronald Colman), in 1967 he was resurrected and given a full Bondian makeover. Richard Johnson, one of the original contenders for the coveted role of 007, stars as Drummond, who is now a suave insurance investigator trailing a pair of sexy assassins (Elke Sommer and Sylva Koscina). The highlight sees our hero arriving at an island castle and battling a dastardly villain and his muscle-bound, Oddjob-esque bodyguard on a giant chessboard that uses motorized, man-sized pieces.
