More than invaluable, the revelatory Mondo Lux offers an essential introduction to the work and being of Werner Schroeter. Assembled with great insight and intimacy by his long-time cinematographer Elfi Mikesch, the film captures Schroeter's spirit through interviews with his stars (Isabelle Huppert is particularly eloquent), fellow directors (Wim Wenders), film and theatre collaborators, and with Schroeter, emaciated by cancer, himself. Working to the very end, Schroeter is shown organizing an exhibition of his photographs, directing a play in Berlin, attending festival screenings, supervising the dubbing sessions for his last film Nuit de chien, and, with playful irreverence, reminiscing with his former lover, then nemesis, then fast friend Rosa von Praunheim. Copious clips from Schroeter's films illustrate his artistic legacy, and his belief that in his work there are only high points.
