Released from a North Korean prison after a brutal fourteen-month incarceration, a shaken Bond partners with a sexy NSA agent (Halle Berry) to stop a rogue Korean colonel from unleashing his hi-tech galactic weaponry against the South.
Captured in North Korea after foiling a clandestine weapons deal by rogue Korean Colonel Moon (Will Yun Lee), Bond is imprisoned and tortured for fourteen months until being traded back to MI6 in a prisoner exchange. His double-O status suspended, a bitter Bond determines to complete his mission unofficially. Teaming up with sultry NSA agent Jinx (Halle Berry), Bond learns that Colonel Moon has had extensive plastic surgery to remake himself as British billionaire Gustav Graves (Toby Stephens), and has harnessed solar energy technology with the aim of cutting a destructive path through the Korean DMZ and paving the way for a North Korean takeover of the South. The most financially successful Bond film ever (until its immediate successor Casino Royale), Pierce Brosnan's last go-round as 007 is also one of the most little-loved, leaning heavily on CGI effects (Invisible cars?) On the other hand, Kiwi director Lee Tamahori (Once Were Warriors) brings a hard edge to some of the less computer-assisted action sequences-and who could complain about Berry recreating Ursula Andress' famous bikini-clad emergence from the ocean in Dr. No?
