Film Description

Thérèse Desqueyroux

Premiered at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and a Special Presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival®, late director Claude Miller’s exquisite adaptation of the classic novel by François Mauriac stars Audrey Tautou as a provincial housewife in 1920s France whose suffocating marriage inspires her to a fatal bid for freedom.

Having agreed to marry wealthy, boorish landowner Bernard Desqueyroux (Gilles Lellouche, Little White Lies, Love Me If You Dare) less for love than for convenience, Thérèse (Tautou) soon becomes disillusioned with her life of idle luxury with a man more interested in his dogs and the hunt than in attending to the wishes and needs of his young bride. When Thérèse’s best friend and Bernard’s younger sister Anne (Anaïs Demoustier, Elles) falls madly in love with a handsome young Portuguese man, Thérèse begins to see what has been missing in her life. Corralled by Bernard’s family into persuading Anne to forego her planned nuptials, she begins to see first-hand the awesome power of passionate love. Soon, Thérèse begins her own fight against the oppressive Desqueyroux clan.

Sumptously photographed to capture the full beauty of the pine-forested Landes area in southwest France, Thérèse Desqueyroux is a beautifully conceived costume melodrama of exquisite taste. And in Mauriac’s mysterious and mercurial Thérèse — a heroine of the same majestic stature as Flaubert’s Emma Bovary or Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina — the luminous Tautou has found a role that does full justice to her extraordinary talents.

"A beautiful portrait of a woman torn between her intellectual nature and the conventions imposed on her by society (a docile wife, a loving mother, a pragmatic woman), Thérèse Desqueyroux very justly depicts the wall of silence built up by things left unsaid." —Fabien Lemercier, Cineuropa
