Beasts of the Southern Wild

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and Best Cinematography award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, Beasts of the Southern Wild is the stunning debut of first-time filmmaker Benh Zeitlin. Adapted by Zeitlin and playwright Lucy Alibar from Alibar’s play Juicy and Delicious, this charming, delightfully eccentric and staggeringly ambitious allegory of ecological apocalypse quickly became one of the year’s cinematic causes célèbres.

Our heroine, Hushpuppy (an astonishing debut by Quvenzhané Wallis), is a six-year-old girl who lives with her boozing father Wink
(Dwight Henry) in “The Bathtub,” a marshy swampland cut off from the coast of southern Louisiana. Fearless and resilient, Hushpuppy faces the uncertainties and terrors of the world with an indomitable will born of Wink’s tough love — a strength that will be sorely tested when Wink contracts a mysterious illness and nature suddenly flies out of control. As temperatures rise and floodwaters surge into the Bathtub, Hushpuppy and Wink embark on an increasingly bizarre odyssey to restart their lives, and the world itself.

Equal parts mythological, anthropological, folkloric and apocalyptic, Beasts of the Southern Wild creates a universe that is both utterly fantastic and uncannily familiar, timeless and urgently topical in its evocation of a community striving to rebuild itself in the wake of disaster. Featuring an unforgettable performance from newcomer Wallis as the defiant, imaginative young heroine, Beasts of
the Southern Wild
is not to be missed.

"A brave and inspired antidote to time-wasting mainstream movies, it is unlike anything you’ve seen before or will likely ever see again. In short, it is unforgettable." — Rex Reed, New York Observer
