To Rome with Love
Following the tremendous success of the Academy Award-winning Midnight in Paris, his love letter to the City of Light, Woody Allen turns to the Eternal City with his new comedy. Featuring an impressive ensemble that includes Alec Baldwin (Rock of Ages, It’s Complicated), Penélope Cruz (Broken Embraces, Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Roberto Benigni (Life Is Beautiful), Judy Davis (The
Eye of the Storm, Marie Antoinette), Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network, The Squid and the Whale), Ellen Page (Inception, Juno), Greta Gerwig (Damsels in Distress, Greenberg) and Allen himself, To Rome with Love follows a series of criss-crossing adventures and romantic entanglements that take place in one of the world’s most enchanting cities.
Loosely inspired by Boccaccio’s The Decameron, the film comprises four intersecting vignettes that follow both locals and visitors to the city. Vacationing architect John (Baldwin) befriends a young man, Jack (Eisenberg), whose romantic travails bring back his own youthful memories. Jack has
fallen head-over-heels for Monica (Page), the dazzling and flirtatious friend of his girlfriend Sally (Gerwig). Meanwhile, retired opera director Gerry (Allen) arrives in Rome with his wife Phyllis (Davis) to meet their daughter’s fiancée, but when Gerry discovers a local mortician singing arias worthy of La Scala, he seizes on the opportunity to rejuvenate his own career. Across the city, Leopoldo
(Benigni), an average middle-class Roman, wakes up one morning to find himself one of the most famous men in Italy. Unaccustomed to the limelight, he starts to enjoy his celebrity, but soon learns that it comes at a cost. Finally, newlywed Antonio (Alessandro Tiberi) is forced to pass off a stranger (Cruz) as his new bride to his straitlaced relatives when he is accidentally separated from his
wife for the day.
Exquisitely photographed and filled with delightful performances, To Rome with Love is a perfect entertainment, light in tone but rich in humour, culture, and charm. You’ll definitely want to dust off your passport.
