Cronenberg Opening Event

Evolution
Wednesday, October 30
TIFF Bell Lightbox

We marked the opening celebration of David Cronenberg: Evolution on Wednesday, October 30 with a delightfully disturbing trip through the mind of this prolific Canadian filmmaker.

We were honoured to have David Cronenberg, his wife Carolyn and daughters Cassandra and Caitlin join us at our VIP reception along with a few of his closest collaborators: Academy Award–winning actor Jeremy Irons (Dead Ringers, M. Butterfly), producers Jeremy Thomas (Naked Lunch) and Martin Katz (Cosmopolis), and production designer Carol Spier (eXistenZ). DJ Tony Haze set the mood with samples and mixes from Cronenberg films and Oliver & Bonacini Chef Jamie Meireles served a deliciously Canadian feast.

Every corner of TIFF Bell Lightbox was filled with Cronenberg-inspired installations and interactive entertainment. Guests enjoyed a cold vodka and rolled the dice in our Eastern Promises casino. They visited our AUTO/EROTICA loading docks to engineer their own physical transformation in our Fly–themed "telepod" photobooth and ventured into the hallucinatory Crash zone to hear three the pulsating sounds of Toronto's hottest electro-pop bands, The Number Line, Paradise Animals and Nyssa. In the Atrium, Brendan Canning (Broken Social Scene) had guests dancing until the wee hours of the morning with his custom DJ set.

A trip to The Freudian Slipour A Dangerous Method psychoanalyst's office—offered visitors a treatment of retail therapy (a desirable array of silent auction packages).

After the party, our BMC Lab technicians shifted their headquarters back to the CIBC Canadian Film Gallery on the 4th floor of TIFF Bell Lightbox where they will continue their work on human enhancement biotechnology inspired by the experiments Cronenberg presented in Scanners, Videodrome and eXistenZ.

Proceeds from this event help support year-round film programming, education initiatives and community outreach at TIFF. We are excited to announce that the event was a great success and on behalf of the organizing committee, thank you for your generous support of this fascinating exhibition.

Special thanks to Bobby Kimberly and Adam Belanger from the Young Lions Music Club who brought our loading docks to life, to the artists from Theatrix School of Makeup who busily applied scars and tattoos to guests throughout the night in the Keloid Clinic, and to the dealers from Nightlife Entertainment for keeping the casino tables warm in the Ankara Social Club.
