Last year, attending my first TIFF in decades, I had the most satisfying experience. I was able to see films deeply nourishing to me as a moviegoer, while also getting a tremendous amount of work done.
Three docs I'm looking forward to?
Frederick Wiseman presents La Danse (the director pictured) - Can't miss this! Wiseman's films are always uniquely fascinating and an immersion into the Paris ballet environment? Sounds divine. I also love that he'll be speaking publicly. I had the good fortune of seeing him in person at the University of Texas - RTF Master Class two years ago, and he was brilliant.
Peter Berg Presents Kings Ransom - Another from the Maverick Series. I'm actually quite interested in this ESPN 30 by 30 series in general. I'm not particularly a sports fan, but I live with a rabid one, so have become a kind of tourist to the world of sports and sports' fans. Loving Berg's Friday Night Lights television series adds to the allure.
Collapse (dir. Chris Smith) - Again, a choice by director. I'm always interested in anything Chris Smith does. His recent narrative The Pool was a jewel, and American Movie remains one of my favorites docs of all time.
Schmatta: Rags to Riches to Rags (dir. Marc Levin) - What a great prism with which to explore New York City, immigration, religion, financial booms and busts, not to mention all of our cultural history. Interested as a New Yorker, with yes, some personal family and friends' ties to the subject.
