TIFF announced the bulk of its documentary line-up today (though, trust me, we still have some revelations yet to come). Every year when this happens, journalists ask me if there's any dominant theme. Normally, my answer is "no." Usually, you might detect a few clusters of similar films, but bigger themes are unusual. This year, I have a different take. Watching many of these films as a group, I got a sense of a world out of balance. Documentary makers have been suggesting this as far back as Godfrey Reggio's KOYAANISQATSI (1982) - a title that took the Hopi word meaning "life out of balance." And you could certainly detect warnings in docs like last year's FOOD, INC. But this year, that theme emerges at full pitch in films like COLONY (pictured), COLLAPSE, HOW TO FOLD A FLAG, SCHMATTA and even the Family Zone title TURTLE: AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY with its environmental warnings.
Of course, not every film fits this category. There's a rollicking adventure in SNOWBLIND, a cinematic revelation in L'ENFER DE HENRI-GEORGES CLOUZOT, the musical phenomena of the TOPP TWINS and WHITE STRIPES, and more.
