"Couldn't believe it when they all said yes," were the words of
Lesley Chilcott when she found out Jimmy Page, U2's the Edge and Jack White all agreed to participate in the making of It Might Get Loud by Davis Guggenheim. What made this screening so much more special was that all three guitarists attended, watched the film with the audience and stayed for a Q&A session. The Ryerson theatre was filled to capacity with music and film fans of all ages. I met a couple sitting next to me, who said this was their first TIFF screening. They were very impressed and rightfully so. There was a standing ovation during the introduction and at the end of the film; people were just super hyped. The film itself is a great look at the skills and amazing careers of these great guitarists. The scenes of the three of them jamming and discussing the art of guitar playing are part of a surreal concert that only very few get to witness. I think the audience wished there had been more of them playing; however, getting to know each artist in his respective home countries is also quite interesting and entertaining. When asked if there had been a plan of what to play, Jimmy Page simply answered: "There wasn't any sketch of what we were gonna do... it pretty much unfolded itself." All three musicians were very honest and charismatic at the same time. Jack White said he "liked the idea that it was part of something mechanical. That three people take part in it... that's what interested me." The Edge ended by telling the audience it was cool to see "how many equipment pieces we had in common." It seemed like the three of them knew each other for much longer than they actually do. This level of comfort and rapport among the three was evident in the film but also in person. I must admit, this will be a highlight for me for a long time to come. Hope you were able to enjoy it also.
