This year, in anticipation of our blogs, fellow programmer Thom Powers and I tried capture some of our experience in Cannes on video, hoping to edit them and post them on the blogs when we returned. As it was my first time shooting with video, I found it hard to remember when to pull out the camera to capture the many 'Cannes moments'. It was trial and errror with the biggest error being the humiliating experience of, after Eli Roth sneaked SXSW programmer Matt Dentler, Meiles Festival chairman Christian Hallman and myself into the VIP section for the DEATH PROOF party, getting Eli to boast and gush about Midnight Madness, only to realize that I left the camera running in my shoulder bag and none of it got caught on film. Next year...
After Cannes we came back and were thrust into the endurance race that is programming so editing the footage has been the farthest thing from my mind. Over the past weekend I finally got some time to sit down and cull through was clumsy stuff I shot and have come up with this little montage to convey part of my experience in Cannes. Highlights: wandering through the maze-like market of films being hawked; running into Tchéky Karyo being interviewed on the lawn of the Grand Hotel: the fireworks celbrating the 60th anniversary of the Festival; the party held by the Korean Film Commision; and the party for Death Proof.
